MISSION
To inspire and facilitate the transition of Hawaii's youth into active and productive members of the community. Transition! strives to do this by:

  • Motivating readers with stories from peers who have found their futures and who now share insights on finding their dreams
  • Facilitating personal and professional development by collecting information on, and guiding readers toward, the numerous programs available that truly assist students in making connections between education and career issues
  • Regularly listing and describing the many schools, government programs and non-profit organizations dedicated to guiding students to educational and career choices and opportunities
  • Continuously encouraging students to actively participate in real projects as professional consultants, fact-finders, writers and artists
  • Finally, Transition! will keep reaching out to parents and the greater community to promote active involvement with Hawaii teens because we know what a difference this makes. In partnership with the people of Hawaii, we hope to achieve significant and far-reaching results that will transcend the efforts of this magazine or any one group toward the empowerment of our youth through education

STYLE
Transition! Magazine is dynamic and colorful. All materials are edited for style and specific appeal to a Hawaii-based student readership. Wherever possible, humor, cool content, pictures, and Obun Hawaii's award-winning design work keep readers focused.

CONTENT
Much of the content is along the lines of the Hawaii State Career and Technical Education Division's Career Pathways Program. Central to Transition! Magazine are our profiles featuring people who have discovered why their education matters. Our editorial staff includes professional writers, editors and photographers who work their magic using style and language designed to appeal to a young local audience. Informative guides to everything from scholarships to specialized programs relevant to career paths usually accompany these profiles. In short, we draw clear, easy-to-follow lines connecting educational goals with pathways enabling students to reach professional destinations.

Regular coverage of fashion, social events, activities, updated school sports schedules, and other subjects of interest to teens are colorfully presented in each edition. Our section on teen issues ("Teen2Teens"), covers topics such as drug/alcohol-related problems, road safety, dating, etc. An interesting thing about our teen issues is that all of the topics are chosen, researched and written by student contributors.

TheBus Guide

TheBus Map & Guide Book

Magazine Size: 3-7/8" x 8-1/2"
Publication Dates: April

Handy Bus Guides Help Visitors Explore Oahu
For a visitor on Oahu, one of the most economical ways to explore the island and its many offerings is on TheBus. But figuring out which bus to take can be difficult for anyone not familiar with the locations of our attractions, shopping centers and beaches. Not so with the use of TheBus Map & Guide Book. Four-color English and Japanese guides are available in stores now.

The City and County of Honolulu first approached Obun Hawaii Group in 1994 about publishing a Japanese version of a guide book for Japanese visitors who use TheBus. Due to the guide book's popularity, an English version was requested two years later. And the rest is history.

"TheBus Map and Guide is an excellent example of a successful public-private partnership," says Obun Hawaii Group President Raymond Nishigaya. "The City also receives a percentage of the royalties from the sale of the guide books." The Japanese edition is $7.50 and the English version is $4.99. Both are available throughout Waikiki at various retail locations where monthly bus passes are sold.
